Explore the City of Madrid

If you're planning to take a trip through Spain, don't forget to head to the country's capital city of Madrid. Formerly owned by the monarchy, this now public park houses sculptures, galleries, and other activities and is just a short distance away from the museums. 

While in Madrid, don't forget to make a stop in the city's downtown area and explore the Plaza Mayor. To enter this enclosed historical square you must pass through one of nine doors. Historically, this area was used for public events, such as bullfights and markets, but is now known for its architecture, cafes, shops, and street performers. The Puerta del Sol, another world famous public square, is close enough to include in your trip. 

A trip to Spain wouldn't be complete without some local cuisine. Although Spain is recognized for its tapas, one of the most talked about places in the city is the San Ginés Chocolateria. This cafe specializes in hot chocolate and churros which make for a perfect late night combination. Don't expect your traditional hot chocolate, but rather a thicker and richer mug of chocolate to dip your churros into. Don't be surprised to see this place buzzing late at night as it is a favorite for locals and tourists alike.
