If you're a 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' fan, then you probably know that these extremely popular movies were filmed in the beautiful New Zealand. This means that, if you truly loved these amazing, award winning movies, you could hop on a plane and experience some of the sets for yourself!

In this post, you'll find where you should go to visit Middle Earth!

Explore the Sets of the Hobbit in New Zealand

In North Island

While most of the Lord of the Rings locations were filmed in South Island, probably the most recognizable ones are in North Island, in Matamata. Mainly, the Shire and Hobbiton!

Not only can you look at the set,  you can actually walk through the town that saw Frodo Baggins begin his adventure to destroy the One Ring. And, you could even have a full banquet there!

In South Island

"They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!"

Isengard, referenced in the famous Legolas quote above, is located in New Zeland, too, but in the South Island. And it's not the only set you could find there. You can also see:
  • Edoras in Canterbury
  • River Anduin and Fangorn Forest in Fiordland
  • Ford of Bruinen, Lothlorien, and the aforementioned Isengard in Souther Lakes.
  • Pelennor Fields in Mackenzie Country
  • Chetwood Forest, Rivendell, and Dimrill Dale in Nelson Tasman
These are awesome because they were featured in the movies. Plus, they're extremely beautiful natural places that you must experience, regardless.
