One of the most iconic sites in the city if the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. Its impressive architecture is unlike anything you’ll find in any other corner of the world. Since it’s now a museum, you can step inside and explore the interior, which is just as impressive as the exterior. Other places to visit include the Hermitage Museum, which is likely the oldest museum in the world, Peterhof Palace, St. Isaacs’s Cathedral, and definitely check out the opera at the Mariinsky Theater.

Eat Like a Local in St. Petersburg

While in Russia, eat like a Russian. There are many unique dishes to try, including beef stroganoff, which dates back to the 19th century, vareniki, a sort of Russian dumpling, and pirozhki, traditional buns stuffed with a sweet or savory filling. There are popular and trendy restaurants, like Biblioteka, that offer traditional Russian dishes with a high end feel.

Where to Stay
