Jerusalem is known around the world as a place where cultures converge. This old, majestic city in Israel is also home to some of the most precious historic sites, one of which is the Western Wall! This relic is the most precious and sacred place for Jewish religion. If you’d like to learn more, read this post Brit Olom Tours, Inc. in Miami has for you!

The Western Wall

The Western Wall was built in 20 BCE and is a 187 foot limestone construction that sits atop the Temple Mount, where different religions and cultures coexist.
Originally, it formed part of an enclosing wall, constructed to surround the ancient Holy Temple. But time, wars and different administrations, have left only the preserved portion we see today. The importance of the Western Wall or The Kotel in Hebrew comes from its being the only remainder of the ancient Temple.

Not only that, but the Western Wall is near the Foundation Stone, which Jews believe to be the location of the holiest site of the Temple. People pray in its direction because of its significance.

Below the surface, the Western Wall has a tunnel that, at 1,700 feet long, is a testament to the original length of the wall that enclosed the Holy Temple.

The Traditions

As mentioned above, the Western Wall holds great religious significance for Judaism. People from all over the world come to visit and pray in this site. So much so, that some rabbis believe visiting this sacred site is a duty that must be fulfilled by all Jewish people.

There are several rituals followed when praying at the Wall. For example, some believe you should mourn the Temple’s remnants, the destruction of the city, and the dispersion of its people.

Visitors will often write their prayers on a piece of paper, and place it in the cracks of the Wall. Many of these supplications ask for a gathering and understanding of all Jewish people, the reconstruction of the Holy Temple, and the coming of the Messiah.
